Gary Thacker, General Manager

What did you want to be when you grew up?

Taller! No really, when I was very young I wanted to be a train driver, but later a footballer. I grew out of being loco about a loco, but I've still got the ‘Old Magic Silky Skills’, so I'm hanging on to the football dream.

If you could choose your own name, what would you call yourself?

Tarquin FinBin LinBin Bus Stop F’Tang F’Tang Ole Biscuit Barrel.

Which cartoon character are you most like?

I should say something like Superman, Batman or another superhero, but if I'm being honest, it’s got to be Daffy Duck; intense and frantic with big ideas, but ultimately frustrated.

What is your drink or drug of choice?

Is it too easy to say alcohol? Probably gin and tonic though, if I’m pushed – not that you’d need to push me very hard!

Who was your favourite celebrity as a child?

Peter Osgood – ‘The King of Stamford Bridge’ – was always my idol.

What is your favourite smell?

My wife in the morning when we wake up. She smells of warmth and being My Best Girl. Even after 30 years’ of marriage it can still make me light-headed.

Apart from property, what is the most expensive thing you’ve ever bought?

I didn’t buy the kids, but they’ve certainly been expensive. Wouldn’t swap them though!

Would you ever consider plastic surgery, and if so, what would you have done?

Can’t think of a reason that I would. It’s like putting a wig on if you’re bald. It doesn’t make you any less bald, and the person least convinced by the disguise is yourself.

If you were on ‘The X Factor’, what song would you sing?

My singing is the stuff of legend – but not in a good way. That said, let’s go with ‘Lay Lady Lay’ by Bob Dylan. That way I may not suffer too much by comparison, and what a great song!

What three things would you take with you to a deserted island?

  1. The Desert Island Survival Book.

  2. A television with a Sky satellite dish.

  3. The missus.

If you could travel back in time, what famous event would you like to observe?

The Spanish Civil War – but only if I could change the outcome.

Share with us two truths and one lie about yourself...

  1. I once scored seven goals – all from headers – in a school football match.

  2. I never owned a car until I was over 50 years old.

  3. When I took my 11-plus exam, I got the second highest mark in the Walsall area.
